Rishi Sunak's first address as UK prime minister
Good morning. UK PM I've just been to Buckingham Palace and accepted His Majesty the King's invitation to form a government in his name. It is only right to explain why I'm standing here as your new prime minister right now. Our country is facing a profound economic crisis The aftermath of COVID still lingers Putin's war in Ukraine has destabilized energy markets and Supply chains the world over I want to pay tribute to my predecessor Liz Truss she was not wrong to want to improve growth in this country it is a noble aim and I admired her restlessness to create change but some mistakes were made not born of ill will or bad intentions quite the opposite in fact that mistakes nonetheless and I have been elected as leader of my party and your prime minister in part to fix them and that work begins immediately I will place economic stability and confidence at the heart of this government's agenda this will mean difficult decisions to come but you saw me during covid doing everything I could to protect people and businesses with schemes like furlough there are always limits more so now than ever but I promise you this I will bring that same compassion to the challenges we face today the government I lead will not leave the Next Generation your children and grandchildren with a debt to settle that we were too weak to pay ourselves I will unite our country not with words but with action I will work day in and day out to deliver for you this government will have integrity professionalism and accountability at every level Trust is earned and I will earn yours. I will always be grateful to Boris Johnson for his incredible achievements as prime minister and I treasure his warmth and generosity of spirit. I know he would agree that the mandate my party earned in 2019 is not the sole property of any one individual. It is a mandate that belongs to and unites all of us and the heart of that mandate is our manifesto. I will deliver on its promise of a stronger NHS, better schools safer streets control of our borders Protecting our environment, supporting our Armed Forces, levelling up and building an economy that embraces the opportunities of Brexit where businesses invest, innovate and create jobs I understand how difficult this moment is after the billions of pounds it cost us to combat covert after all the dislocation that caused in the midst of a terrible war that must be seen successfully to its conclusions I fully appreciate how hard things are and I understand too that I have work to do to restore trust after all that has happened all I can say is that I am not daunted I know the high office I have accepted and I hope to live up to its demands but when the opportunity to serve comes along you cannot question the moment only your willingness so I stand here before you ready to lead our country into the future to put your needs above politics to reach out and build a government that represents the very best traditions of my party together we can achieve incredible things we will create a future worthy of the sacrifices so many have made and Phil tomorrow and every day thereafter with hope thank you

The Finance Minister then a leading Contender and now the Prime Minister Rishi sunak is going to take over office when the United Kingdom stands at a crucial point the nation desperately seeks stability but does sunak have what it takes let's Decode by looking at his past political life it is the greatest privilege of my life to be able to serve the party I love and give back to the country I owe so much to who
is Rishi sunak Britain's new prime minister
I am resigning after Liz truss's chaotic
six weeks in charge we have made
mistakes Boris Johnson's aborted
comeback Mission and Penny morden's
failure to secure enough Tory backers 42 year old sunak is now at the helm of a country desperately in need of some stability
let's take a look at how he got here
that means honesty and responsibility
not fairy tales southampton-born
sunac is the UK's first prime minister
of Indian descent his family migrated to
Britain in the 1960s, a period when many
people from Britain's former colonies
moved to the country to help it rebuild
after the second World War sunak attended the exclusive Private School Winchester College studied philosophy politics and economics at Oxford University and then got an MBA from Stanford University it was there he met his wife akshata murti whose father is Indian billionaire Narayan murti founder of I.T Services giant Infosys before entering politics sulak worked as an analyst at Goldman Sachs and was later a partner at two hedge funds he's thought to be one of the richest members of parliament and his wealth and private school background has come into Focus during TV debates sunak was elected to Parliament in 2015 and had a Swift Rise within the conservative party he campaigned for leave in the EU referendum by 2020 aged only 39 sunak was named Finance Minister by Boris Johnson delighted to be appointed a lot to get on with thanks within weeks of becoming Chancellor sunak found himself having to steer the UK economy as the covid-19 pandemic began I said I would do whatever it takes he pledged to do whatever it takes to help people through the pandemic and developed a popular furlough scheme to support millions of people through multiple lockdowns he was also behind the eat out to help out initiative to boost the struggling Hospitality sector in summer 2020 that included waiting tables as a central London Eatery there we go in April 2022 sunac had to deal with the Fallout of being fined by police for breaking lockdown rules in Downing Street in June 2020. in
that same month he and his family's finances
came under intense scrutiny it was
revealed that his wife who is an Indian
citizen had not been paying her British
tax on her foreign income through her
non-domiciled status the status is
available to foreign Nationals who do
not see Britain as their permanent home
she's always followed all the rules paid
all the tax in the UK that is due and
pay tax internationally on her
International Investments but she
recognizes this goes beyond just
following those rules the revelations
hurt sunak ahead of his race against Liz
Truss unak eventually resigned as
Chancellor in July 2022 a move that
contributed to the downfall of Johnson
as Tory leader and prime minister hasta
la vista baby during the race to replace
his former boss sunak lost out to trust
in the last leadership contest while some choose to label the multi-millionaire as out of touch others believe sunach is the person to bring some calm to the economy we need a return to traditional conservative economic values after all he was proven right in his warnings that truss's fiscal plan threatened Financial stability
sunac has pledged to bring Integrity
professionalism and accountability to
government but he has a mountain to
climb to try to restore or renew the
reputation of the conservative party
following one of the most turbulent
periods in British political history
joined by a senior UK journalist Nicholas
Nugent listening to his insights [Music]
uh yes and I I'm going to give credit
here to Boris Johnson and many people
don't have much good to say about Boris
Johnson at the moment but he did bring a
lot of non-british origin people into
his cabinet it was the most diverse
cabinet we've ever seen and of course
Rishi sunak was one of those so uh Boris
Johnson paved the way for us to get over
whatever lingering uh questions we might
have about appointing somebody of
non-british origin having said that
Rishi sunak is more British than I am in
a way he was born and bred in Britain
and uh he spent his whole life in
Britain so he's uh he he's absolutely
British despite that Indian origin and
uh there's been a lot of discussion
today about this being the first non-white
uh uh prime minister to take office and
indeed it is but we have as has been
pointed out it's not the first non-Christian
to take office because we have had a
Jewish leader in benjamined Israeli but
that was a long long time ago so I hope
this means we're entering the modern era
in which skin color doesn't count but
intelligence does because in my personal
opinion that's why Rishi sunak won he
showed he would so much more intelligent
and had a much greater command of the
things that matter notably management of
the economy than any of the other
contenders and that's why I think he's
there “and and I wish him well and of
course it's a very nice touch that he is
elected to that position on Diwali so uh
Indians can celebrate as well
